Some Sabbath Keepers Don’t Understand Hebrews 8:6-9
I have recently read an article in which
someone used the following scripture to teach against the
keeping of Gods commandments as contained within the Bible.
Please consider the following:
(Speaking of Yeshuah)
6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry,
inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was
established on better promises.
7 For if that
first covenant had been faultless, then no place would
have been sought for a second.
8 Because
finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are
coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah--
9 "not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in
the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the
land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and
I disregarded them, says the LORD.
(Heb 8:6-9 NKJ)
The argument goes
like something like this; God took away the “Jewish”
commandments and replaced them with a new covenant. Further, the
person will go on to quote something like:
14 not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men
who turn from the truth. (Tit 1:14 NKJ)
To keep things
relatively short and simple I will make the three following
points:
1.
If you think Hebrews 8:7-8 is about finding fault in God’s
covenant then you believe in a God that makes faulty convents.
Does your God make faulty covenants? Wouldn't it be much more likely
that the point is.... that the first covenant was able to find fault
in “them”, meaning God’s people. However, if you check the Greek
text, you will find “with them” is not there!
2.
Read Hebrews 8:8. Does “with them” make sense when
referring to the “first covenant” (a singular item)?
3.
Do you think that any of God’s commandments as recorded
anywhere in the Bible are “Jewish Fables” or “commandments of
men”?
To read about
what the “New Covenant” actually is it is given just a few
verses down:
10 "For this is the covenant that I will make with
the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put
My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will
be their God, and they shall be My people. (Heb 8:10 NKJ)
What’s on your heart?
